Propyl acetate, also called n-propyl acetate, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H12O2 . It is a colorless liquid with a fruity, pleasant odor similar to pears or apples, derived from its ester structure. With a molecular weight of approximately 102.13 g/mol, it has a density of about0.888g/mL at 20 °C, making it less dense than water. It features a freezing point of  (-134.5 °F) and a boiling point of  (214.9 °F), remaining liquid under most ambient conditions. Sparingly soluble in water, it mixes well with organic solvents like ethanol and diethyl ether, showcasing its versatile solubility properties.

 

Propyl acetate serves as a key industrial solvent in applications such as paints, lacquers, and printing inks, where it effectively dissolves resins and polymers to facilitate coating formulations. It also acts as a flavor-ing agent in the food industry, imparting fruity notes to confectionery and beverages, and as a fragrance component in cosmetics. Addition-ally, it finds use in the production of textiles, plastics, and artificial leather, as well as in pharmaceutical processes and as a cleaning agent for electronics. However, it is flammable and should be handled in well-ventilated areas to avoid vapor ignition. Prolonged exposure may cause eye and skin irritation, necessitating proper safety precautions during storage and use.
